One of the most used filters is the canister fish tank filter due to its durability and the ability to stay for a more extended period without maintenance and cleaning. Despite the existence of a variety of these filters, maintaining and cleaning them is same.
For you to carry out your cleaning, you need to ensure that you have all the cleaning equipment’s in place for efficiency. They include:
- Toothbrush-for scrubbing algae
- Scrub pad-for scrubbing stubborn algae
- A siphon
- Clean workplace
- Aquarium water bucket
- Rubber bands or string

Turning off the filters and shutting the valves
It’s the first thing you need to do. You should turn off the power to the filter to close off the water inlet leaving the filter hose intake inside the aquarium. After that, you then have to shut down the valves to prevent water from spilling out when disconnected.

Once you have the pipes off, you need to carry the filter to the area you designed for working. This area should be close to high-pressure water to ensure your cleaning is efficient.

You need then to take out your biological media trays and put them aside. This because at times they get the waste matter on them. Place them in a bucket of aquarium water in order not to lose your beneficial bacteria.

Before resuming the canister, ensure that everything is working as it should. You should then connect the hose inlet to the filter but don’t join the outlet first. Before turning on, you can ensure that the water level is at per to prevent airlock. After that, you can turn on the filter and allow the water to flow smoothly. Remember to tie a sock on the inlet to avoid waste and detergents from spilling back into the tank. Lastly, you can then confidently open the outlet.
